Frequently Asked Questions

We will do our best to answer all your questions but please do not hesitate to Contact Us for more information that may not be listed.
Do you use real cars to teach Driver Education?
Of course we do! Albuquerque Driving School has a partnership with Albuquerque Indoor Karting to provide our students with a fun option to use while on break instead of sitting around and drinking a coke waiting for your next class to begin. Learning to drive is a serious responsibility and kart racing is just for the fun. However, at this time due to covid-19 we do not have karting available.

Will I receive an insurance discount for taking these classes?
All students completing a driving program through Albuquerque Driving School will be issued a completion certificate to present to your insurance company. This certificate will satisfy most insurance carriers, however we highly recommend that you check with your insurance agent to determine whether your policy has specific requirements to be eligible for a discount.

Who are the instructors and what are their credentials?
All instructors have successfully completed background checks, obtained Department of Public Safety clearance, completed extensive training including yearly re-certification.

What does the Driving Instruction consists of?
Students don’t need any prior experience driving, that’s what we are here to do, teach you how to drive.
Instructors will work to provide students with a variety of skill building exercises including but not limited to the following:
  • High volume traffic areas
  • Complex Driving such as Downtown Albuquerque, etc..
  • Freeway driving/Merging
  • Parallel parking
  • Defensive driving
  • Rural/Residential Driving
  • Parking Maneuvers
  • Up Hill/Down Hill Parking
  • Scanning/Speed Control
  • DWI Education and Prevention

There is no guarantee that students completing our program will obtain a driver license. Individuals learn at different rates and some students may not be ready after the initial hours. Your individual instructor will provide information regarding your particular situation and advise you of your options.

What about insurance?
Please check with your individual carrier regarding information.

How old do you have to be to take Driver Education?
You must be 15.

How do I enroll in one of your classes and how much does it cost?
You may pre-register for any of our classes online by using the registration form on this website.

My friends tell me I can have extra passengers in the car if I'm just going to and from school even though I still have my provisional license. Is this true?
NO! It does not matter where you are going or why. The law states that you cannot have more than one passenger under the age of 21 unless they are immediate family members.

Can I drive alone on my learners permit as long as I only drive from school and back?
NO. You must ALWAYS have a licensed driver over the age of 21 while driving on the learners permit.

I have had driver’s education at my high school; can I still take your course?
Yes. Many of our students take driver education at their high school. Then they take our course to obtain the specified driving time as required by law and realize the benefit of the in-car instruction as well as possibly reducing insurance rates.

I've finished my classroom phase, driving with an instructor, road test and my 50 hour log. Now what do I do?
You were issued the Certificate of Completion after finishing your behind the wheel hours. After you have had your learner's permit for a minimum of six months, you may then go to MVD to apply for a provisional license with your documents.

What documentation do I have to take to MVD when I apply for my provisional license?
You will need a state certified birth certificate, (or other legal proof of age), your social security CARD, your learner's permit, written proof of 50 hours of driving, TSB Certificate of Completion, 2 proofs of NM residency and a parent or guardian if you are under the age of 18.

What if I'm over the age of 18?
Anyone age 18-24 may apply for a first-time New Mexico driver's license at the State of New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department after completing the "None for the Road" Alcohol Awareness Program. You must then take the state written & state road test at the MVD or with a state approved contractor that offers these exams.    Keep this in mind: Taking a state certified Driver Education course will possibly reduce your insurance rates now and over the course of your lifetime (please check with your individual insurance carrier).

I am over 18. Do I have to have a Learners Permit to drive even though I am driving with an instructor or a licensed driver over the age of 21?
Yes. ANYONE who is not otherwise licensed to drive a motor vehicle MUST have a valid Learners Permit in order to be legally behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. You MUST also abide by the provisions of the Learners Permit, i.e. there must be a licensed driver over the age of 21 in the front passenger seat.

Do you provide transportation to and from classes or pick up students for their driving times?
No. You must provide your own transportation to and from both class and driving instruction

Are you also a truck driving school to get a CDL?
No. We do not offer CDL or any other type of truck driving schooling.
